The Brutalist 1971 concrete and glass building replaced a classic 1841 courthouse in Goshen.  It is located on Main Street at Scotchtown Road.  Main Street is New York State Highway 207 in the town.  Paul Rudolph designed this courthouse.  The courthouse was enlarged in 1999 and renovated in 2017.  Orange County is an original county (5th county) formed on November 1, 1683.  There was also an 1841 courthouse in Newburgh.  Orangetown was the first county seat until 1737 when Goshen became the county seat.  Newburgh shared county seat duties with Goshen from 1841 to 1970.  The county is named for William III of Orange.  The county seat is named for the Biblical land.  Orange County was the birthplace for 4 New York Governors, George Clinton, DeWitt Clinton, William H. Seward, Benjamin B. Odell, Jr. 

Orange County government consists of a sheriff and 21 Legislators.  Three County Court Judge, Five Family Court Judges, and One Surrogate Court Judge serve Orange County.  Orange County is in the southeast on the border with New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  New York City, New York is southeast and Albany, New York is north of the county.  The county center is 1.2 miles Southeast of Goshen.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Ulster, Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, and Rockland counties and New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Sullivan County. 

The area of the county is 839 square miles.  It is 29 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 478.3 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 62 in the state.  Orange County has 45.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 84 crosses the county from east to west from Dutchess County to Pennsylvania.  Interstate Highway 87 goes north to south from Ulster County to Rockland County.  United States Highway 6 parallels Interstate Highway 84 from Westchester County to Pennsylvania.  United States Highway 9W parallels Interstate Highway 87 Ulster to Rockland counties.  The county looks like a pile of leaves.  Goshen is located west and north of center in the county.  Newburgh is in the northeast corner of the county.  Goshen is the county seat and Newburgh is the largest city.  Goshen is 1.4% of the county population while Newburgh is 7.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
