The steel and concrete 2015 building for Richmond County replaced a 1913 courthouse.  Richmondtown had an 1837 version.  The Modern structure is on Central Avenue at Hyatt Street.  The courthouse is three miles north of Interstate Highway 278.  Ennead Architects provided the designs.  A 1961 Judicial Center also supports the courthouse.  Richmond County is an original county (7th county) from November 1, 1683.  Like all of the New York City counties, there is not a distinction for the county seat other than the neighborhood in which the courthouse is located.  The county is named for the son of Charles II. 

Richmond County government consists of a sheriff, a President and 6 Board Members.  Ninety-two County Court Judges serve Richmond, Bronx, Kings, New York, and Queens counties and Three Family Court Judges serve Richmond County.  Richmond County is the westernmost county of New York City.  The county center is in the Staten Island section of New York City 7.1 miles Southwest of the downtown.  The county is surrounded clockwise by New Jersey and Kings and Queens counties and the Atlantic Ocean. 

The area of the county is 103 square miles.  It is 59 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 10 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4813.1 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 62 in the state.  Richmond County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 278 crosses the county east to west from Kings County to New Jersey.  The county is shaped like the State of Kentucky.  Richmond County and the county seat is one in the same therefore there is no separate largest city.  The county seat functions in the Staten Island section of New York City.  Richmond County is 5.6% of New York City’s population.  This county is in the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.
