The Georgian red brick courthouse in Watkins Glen was built in 1856.  The structure is located on 9th Street at Franklin Street.  Franklin Street is New York State Highway 14 in the town.  The building was enlarged in 1952 and 1993 and renovated in 1973.  James A. Drake and William Newman are the architects.  Schuyler County was formed on January 1, 1854 from Steuben, Chemung, and Tompkins counties as the 60th county.  Montour Falls has an 1854 courthouse.  The county is named for American Revolutionary War General Philip Schuyler.  The county seat is named for founder Samuel Watkins.  Schuyler County was the birthplace for 1 New York Governor, David B. Hill. 

Schuyler County government consists of a sheriff and 8 Legislators.  One County Court Judge serves Schuyler County.  The county is in the southwest part of the state.  Buffalo, New York is northwest and Albany, New York is northeast of the county.  The county center is in Watkins Glen .1 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Seneca, Tompkins, Chemung, Steuben, and Yates counties. 

The area of the county is 342 square miles.  It is 53 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 61 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 52.3 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 62 in the state.  Schuyler County has 24.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  Schuyler County looks like a capital letter J.  Watkins Glen is located near the center of the county.  Watkins Glen is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 10.4% of the county population.
