The 1772 red brick building is an original county courthouse. The courthouse is at the intersection of Main and William streets. New York State Highway 67 is Main Street in this part of the town. Samuel Fuller provided the Georgian designs. A Clerk’s Office and an Administration 1962 Building are attached to the courthouse. Fulton County was created from Montgomery County on April 18, 1838 as the 58th county. Fonda and Johnstown have both served as the county seat. The county honors inventor Robert Fulton. The county seat is named for the son of settler William Johnson. Fulton County was the birthplace for 1 New York Governor, Enos T. Throop.

One County Court Judge and One Family Court Judge serve Fulton County (judicial.) Fulton County is in east central New York. Albany, New York is east and Buffalo, New York is west of the county. The county center is 11.9 miles Northwest of Johnstown nearer Caroga Lake. The county is surrounded clockwise by Hamilton, Saratoga, Montgomery, and Herkimer counties.

There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county resembles a square headed fish. Johnstown is on the southern border of the county. Gloversville is slightly northeast of Johnstown. Johnstown is the county seat and Gloversville is the largest city. Johnstown is 15.4% of the county population while Gloversville is 28.4% of the county population. This county is in the Gloversville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
