The Classical Revival masonry structure sits on Court Street at Exchange Street.  It was built in 1898 using the designs of Isaac Perry.  United States Highway 11 is Court Street in the part of the town.  A Courts Building was added in 1999, an Office Building in 1940, and an Administrative Building 1973.  A District Courthouse 1903 also augments.  The county was formed on April 7, 1806 from Tioga County as the 37th county with Binghamton as the only county seat.  Broome County is named for Lieutenant Governor John Broome.  The county seat is named for settler William Bingham. 

Broome County government consists of a sheriff and 15 Legislators.  Two County Court Judges, Four Family Court Judges, and One Surrogate Court Judge serve Broome County.  The county is on the southern border with Pennsylvania.  Buffalo, New York is northwest and New York City, New York is southeast of the county.  The county center is 7.6 miles Northeast of Binghamton nearer Chenango Bridge.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Chenango and Delaware counties and Pennsylvania and Tioga and Cortland counties. 

The area of the county is 715 square miles.  It is 33 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 19 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 277.9 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 62 in the state.  Broome County has 41.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 81 passes north to south in the county from Cortland County to Pennsylvania.  Interstate Highway 88 enters from Chenango County, northeast, and terminates.  United States Highway 11 parallels Interstate Highway 81 from Cortland County to Pennsylvania.  The county is shaped like a chair with an extra cushion.  Binghamton is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Binghamton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 24.1% of the county population.  The county is pronounced BROOM.  This county is in the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
