The rock and masonry Romanesque building was erected in 1903.  The courthouse is on a square at Main, 7th, Washington, and 8th streets.  Main Street is Missouri State Highway 6 in the town.  The courthouse architect is George Berlinghoff.  The building features a tower and a Civil War memorial.  The county was created on January 2, 1841 from Native American Territory as the 64th county with Trenton as the only county seat.  The county is named for United States Attorney General Felix Grundy.  Trenton, New Jersey is the source for the county seat’s name. 

Grundy County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge serves Grundy, Harrison, Mercer, and Putnam counties and One County Court Judge and a court clerk serve Grundy County (judicial.) The county is in northern Missouri.  Kansas City, Missouri is southwest and Saint Louis, Missouri is southeast of the county.  The county center is 12 miles Northeast of Trenton nearer Dunlap.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Mercer, Sullivan, Linn, Livingston, Daviess, and Harrison counties. 

The area of the county is 436 square miles.  It is 99 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 87 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 22.5 persons per square mile making it 72 out of 115 in the state.  Grundy County has 63.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 65 travels through the county north to south from Mercer County to Livingston County.  The county is a rectangle.  Trenton is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Trenton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 57.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced GRUN-DEE.
