The masonry 1930 Classical Revival skyscraper replaced a classic 1826 courthouse. The facility is on 12th between Chestnut and Market streets. United States Highway 40 is four blocks south of the location. The City of Saint Louis separated from Saint Louis County on August 22, 1876 as the 115th and final county equivalent. Klipstein & Rathmann are the architects of the current courthouse. A Justice Center was built in 2002. The city is named for King Louis IX of France. He is also the source for Saint Louis County. Saint Louis City was the birthplace for 4 Missouri Governors, Joseph W. McClurg, Henry S. Caulfield, Christopher S. Bond, and Eric R. Greitens.

Interstate Highway 70 is joined with Interstate Highway 55 from Illinois, splits and travels west into Saint Louis County. United States Highway 40 is joined with Interstate Highway 64 from Illinois to Saint Louis County. Saint Louis City is shaped like a tear drop. Saint Louis is an independent city, therefore, it is the county seat and largest, and only, city. This city is in the Saint Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
