The masonry 1930 Classical Revival skyscraper replaced a classic 1826 courthouse.  The facility is on 12th between Chestnut and Market streets.  United States Highway 40 is four blocks south of the location.  The City of Saint Louis separated from Saint Louis County on August 22, 1876 as the 115th and final county equivalent.  Klipstein & Rathmann are the architects of the current courthouse.  A Justice Center was built in 2002.  The city is named for King Louis IX of France.  He is also the source for Saint Louis County.  Saint Louis City was the birthplace for 4 Missouri Governors, Joseph W. McClurg, Henry S. Caulfield, Christopher S. Bond, and Eric R. Greitens. 

Saint Louis City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, a President, and 28 Aldermen.  Twenty-two Circuit Court Judges and Four City Court Judges serve Saint Louis City.  The City is on the eastern border of the state.  Illinois is across the Mississippi river to the east.  The city center is 2.7 miles West-Northwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Saint Louis County and Illinois. 

The area of the county is 61.9 square miles.  It is 115 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 4 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 48732.0 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 115 in the state.  Saint Louis City has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 44 originates in the county and heads west into Saint Louis County.  Interstate Highway 55 passes east to south from Illinois to Saint Louis County.  Interstate Highway 64 enters joined with Interstate Highway 55 from Illinois, splits and exits west into Saint Louis County.  Interstate Highway 70 is joined with Interstate Highway 55 from Illinois, splits and travels west into Saint Louis County.  United States Highway 40 is joined with Interstate Highway 64 from Illinois to Saint Louis County.  Saint Louis City is shaped like a tear drop.  Saint Louis is an independent city, therefore, it is the county seat and largest, and only, city.  This city is in the Saint Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
