The 1870 light red brick and masonry Federalist facility was remodeled and enlarged in 1932 and sits on a hill on a square surrounded by College, Main, Collier, and Court streets.  Missouri State Highway 47 is five blocks north of the location.  The building features a second-floor porch.  Gustave Bachmann provided the building designs.  The building was enlarged again in 1974.  There were 1822 and 1830 courthouse earlier.  Lincoln County was established on December 17, 1818 from Saint Charles County as the 11^th county.  The county is named for Lincoln County, Kentucky and Lincoln County, North Carolina.  The county seat is named for Troy, New York.  Monroe (1818), Alexandria (1822) and Troy (1829) have all served as county seat.  Lincoln County was the birthplace for 1 Missouri Governor, Elliot W. Major. 

Lincoln County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Circuit Court Judge serves Lincoln and Pike counties and Two County Court Judges serve Lincoln County.  The county is in eastern Missouri on the Mississippi River border with Illinois.  Saint Louis, Missouri is southeast of the county. 

The area of the county is 630 square miles.  It is 47 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 18 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 94.6 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 115 in the state.  Lincoln County has 35.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 61 travels north to south in the county from Pike County to St. Charles County.  The county center is 7.8 miles North of Troy nearer Davis.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pike County and Illinois and St. Charles, Warren, and Montgomery counties.  The county resembles a fat radar gun facing west.  Troy is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Troy is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 21.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Saint Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
