The tan brick 1935 Traditional School structure sits on a square at 4th, Lafayette, Main, and Monticello streets.  William B. Ittner was the building architect.  Missouri State Highway 6 is Lafayette Street in the town.  Trees surround the courthouse on the grounds.  There was an 1848 courthouse previously.  Knox County was organized on February 25, 1845 from Scotland County as the 90th county with Edina as the only county seat.  It is named for United States Secretary of War Henry Knox.  The county seat is named for Edinburgh, Scotland. 

Knox County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge serves Knox, Adair, and Lewis counties and One County Court Judge and a court clerk serve Knox County (judicial.)  The county is northeast Missouri.  Saint Louis, Missouri is southeast and Des Moines, Iowa is northwest of the county.  The county center is 2.8 miles Southeast of Edina.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Scotland, Clark, Lewis, Shelby, Macon, and Adair counties. 

The area of the county is 506 square miles.  It is 80 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 113 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 7.4 persons per square mile making it 113 out of 115 in the state.  Knox County has 47.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is a rectangle.  Edina is located in the northern third of the county.  Edina is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.0% of the county population.
