The Renaissance style red brick courthouse was built in 1883 and sits at Main Street and Depot Street.  James McGrath is the original architect.  The building was remodeled in 1955.  The building has been augmented with a Justice Center in 2004 which is very modern.  There is also an augmenting courthouse in Moberly.  There was an 1858 courthouse also in Huntsville, the only county seat.  United States Highway 24 by passes the city two miles to the south.  The county was founded on January 23, 1829 from Ralls County as the 32nd county.  The county is named for Virginia Senator John Randolph.  The county seat is named for settler Daniel Hunt. 

Randolph County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge serves Randolph and Howard counties and Two County Court Judges and a court clerk serve Randolph County (judicial.)  Randolph County is in northern Missouri.  Saint Louis, Missouri is southeast and Kansas City, Missouri is west of the county.  The county center is 5.5 miles Southeast of Huntsville nearer Moberly.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Macon, Shelby, Monroe, Audrain, Boone, Howard, and Chariton counties. 

The area of the county is 482 square miles.  It is 88 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 44 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 51.3 persons per square mile making it 36 out of 115 in the state.  Randolph County has 66.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 24 goes east to west through the county from Monroe County to Chariton County.  United States Highway 63 travels north to south from Macon County to Boone County.  The county looks like the State of Arizona.  Huntsville is in the western third of the county.  Moberly is in the eastern third of the county.  Huntsville is the county seat and Moberly is the largest city.  Huntsville is 5.6% of the county population while Moberly is 55.9% of the county population.  The largest city is pronounced MOE-BUR-LEE.  This county is in the Moberly Micropolitan Statistical Area.
