A 1953 tan brick and masonry Art Deco building is the county courthouse.  The courthouse is on a square surrounded by 3rd, Salisbury, 4th, and Wentz streets.  Missouri State Highway 19 passes two blocks to the west of the site.  Ernest T. Friton was the architect.  Veteran memorial slabs are on the grounds.  There was an 1889 classier courthouse previously in Montgomery City.  Pinckney (1819), Lewiston (1824), Danville (1834), and Montgomery City (1889) have all been the county seat.  The county was established on December 17, 1818 from Saint Charles County as the 13th county.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero Richard Montgomery.  The county seat is named for him as well. 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Circuit Court Judge serves Montgomery, Audrain, and Warren counties and One County Court Judge serves Montgomery County.  The county is in eastern Missouri.  Saint Louis, Missouri is east and Kansas City, Missouri is west of the county.  The Missouri River forms its southern border.  The county center is 3.2 miles South-Southeast of Montgomery City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pike, Lincoln, Warren, Gasconade, Osage, Callaway, and Audrain counties. 

The area of the county is 539 square miles.  It is 72 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 79 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 21.0 persons per square mile making it 76 out of 115 in the state.  Montgomery County has 53.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 70 crosses the county east to west from Warren County to Callaway County.  United States Highway 40 is joined with Interstate Highway 70 from Warren to Callaway counties.  The county looks like a backwards number 9.  Montgomery City is in the western third of the county.  Montgomery City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 24.9% of the county population.
