The brick Art Deco facility was erected in 1939 at Main Street and Missouri Street.  Missouri State Highway 19 is Main Street in the town.  Dan R. Sanford is the building designer.  The county was formed on January 1, 1837 from parts of Crawford, Greene, and Ripley counties as the 59th county.  There was an 1889 courthouse earlier in Eminence.  Round Spring was the county seat until 1868.  Shannon County is named for explorer George F. Shannon.  The county seat name is geographical descriptive term for its high elevation.  Shannon County was the birthplace for 1 Missouri Governor, Melvin E. Carnahan. 

Shannon County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Circuit Court Judge serves Shannon, Carter, Howell, and Oregon counties and One County Court Judge serves Shannon County.  The county is in the southeast part of the state.  Springfield, Missouri is west and Saint Louis, Missouri is northeast of the county.  The county center is 1.5 miles West-Southwest of Eminence.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Dent, Reynolds, Carter, Oregon, Howell, and Texas counties. 

The area of the county is 1004 square miles.  It is 2 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 101 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 7.0 persons per square mile making it 115 out of 115 in the state.  Shannon County has 29.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 60 crosses the southern part of the county from east to west from Carter County to Howell County.  Shannon County is shaped like a fire hydrant.  Eminence is located near the center of the county.  Winona is in the southeast quarter of the county.  Eminence is the county seat and Winona is the largest city.  Eminence is 7.3% of the county population while Winona is 13.5% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced EM-I-NENZ.  The largest city is pronounced WI-NOE-NA.
