The 1911 tan brick courthouse is located on Webster and 5th streets in this small town. United States Highway 191 is 3 blocks west of the site. E. C. Heck is this Italianate style building architect. It sits on a hill with awnings on the windows. Since the county was formed in 1909, this is the only courthouse serving this county. It was remodeled in 1998 and an Administration Building was added. The county was created from Graham County on March 10, 1909 as the 14th county. Greenlee County was named for settler Mason Greenlee. The county seat was named for nearby cliffs.

Phoenix, Arizona is West and Albuquerque, New Mexico is Northeast of the county. The center of the county is 35.7 miles North of Clifton nearer Morenci. The county is surrounded clockwise by Apache County and New Mexico and Cochise and Graham counties. The county is shaped like a knife blade pointing down. Clifton is located southwest of center in the county. Clifton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 41.2% of the county population.
The area of the county is 1848 square miles. It is 14 of 15 in size. It ranks 15 out of 15 in population in the state. It has a density of 5.2 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 15 in the state. Greenlee County has 48.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 70 crosses the very southern tip of the county going east to west from New Mexico to Graham County. United States Highway 191 passes north to south in the county, Apache County to Graham County. The county is in the Safford Micropolitan Statistical Area.
