The Neo-Classical stone facility was completed in 1906. It is sited on Broadway Street, 3rd Avenue, Oak Street, and 4th Avenue. Broadway Street is Wisconsin State Highway 123. Alfred C. Clas provided the designs. The building was renovated in 1997. It features etchings and veteran memorials. An Annex was added in 1963 and an Administration Building in 1997. The county was created on January 1, 1840 as the 19th county with Baraboo as the only county seat. Sauk County is named for the Native American tribe. The county seat was named for the Baribeau family of settlers. Sauk County is the birthplace of 1 Wisconsin Governor, Emanuel L. Philipp.
Sauk County government consists of a sheriff and 31 Supervisors. Three Circuit Court Judges and Three Municipal Court Judges serve Sauk County. The county is in the southwest part of the state. Madison, Wisconsin is east and Green Bay, Wisconsin is northeast of the county. The Wisconsin River forms its southern, southeast and northeast borders. The county center is 9.7 miles West-Southwest of Baraboo nearer LaRue. The county is surrounded clockwise by Juneau, Columbia, Dane, Iowa, Richland, and Vernon counties.
The area of the county is 830.9 square miles. It is 27 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 25 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 79.2 persons per square mile making it 25 out of 72 in the state. Sauk County has 62.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highways 90/94 clip the northeast corner of the county from Juneau County, north, to Columbia County, east. United States Highway 12 enters the county from the north, Juneau County, and exits to the southeast, Dane County. United States Highway 14 comes from Iowa County, south, and goes to Richland County, west. The county resembles the State of Ohio lying on its west side. Baraboo is located in the northeast quarter of the county. Baraboo is the county seat and the largest city. It is 19.1% of the county population. The county is pronounced SAWK. This county is in the Baraboo Micropolitan Statistical Area.
