The Modern masonry structure was built in 1934. The courthouse is at the intersection of 6th Street at Center Avenue. Wisconsin State Highway 28 is eight blocks to the west of the site. W. C. Weeks, Inc., and K. M. Vitzthum & Company combined on the designs. A 1956 Addition was added to the courthouse. There was also an 1868 courthouse in Sheboygan, the only county seat. The county was founded on January 1, 1836 as the 12th county. Sheboygan County and its county seat are named for a Native American word meaning “water passage.” Sheboygan County is the birthplace of 4 Wisconsin Governors, Francis E. McGovern, Walter J. Kohler, Sr., Walter J. Kohler, Jr, and Anthony S. Evers.
Sheboygan County government consists of a sheriff and 25 Supervisors. Five Circuit Court Judges and Four Municipal Court Judges serve Sheboygan County. Sheboygan County is on the eastern border of the state. Lake Michigan forms its eastern border. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is south and Green Bay, Wisconsin is northwest of the county. The county center is 9.4 miles West-Southwest of Sheboygan nearer Waldo. The county is surrounded clockwise by Manitowoc County and Michigan and Ozaukee, Washington, Fond du Lac, and Calumet counties.
The area of the county is 511.3 square miles. It is 57 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 13 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 230.8 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 72 in the state. Sheboygan County has 69.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 43 crosses north to south in the county from Manitowoc County to Ozaukee County. The county looks like a rectangle with a bulge on the eastern side. The City of Sheboygan is located on the eastern border of the county. Sheboygan is the county seat and the largest city. It is 42.3% of the county population. This county is in the Sheboygan Metropolitan Statistical Area.
