The 1873 Romanesque building was remodeled in 1902 and enlarged in 1938. The courthouse is on Dodge, Vliet, Juneau, and Kilbourn streets. Wisconsin State Highway 42 is one block to the east of the facility. Joseph Meashek is the red brick and stone building designer. The facility features columns and a military gun and veteran memorials are on the grounds. Kewaunee County was organized on January 1, 1852 from Manitowoc County as the 39th county and Kewaunee has always been the county seat. The county and its county seat are Native American for “wild duck.”
Kewaunee County government consists of a sheriff and 20 Supervisors. One Circuit Court Judge serves Kewaunee County. The county is located in the northeast part of Wisconsin. Lake Michigan forms its eastern border. Green Bay, Wisconsin is west and Milwaukee, Wisconsin is south of the county. The county center is 5.5 miles North of Kewaunee nearer Alaska. The county is surrounded clockwise by Door County and Michigan and Manitowoc, Brown, and Oconto counties.
The area of the county is 342.5 square miles. It is 66 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 52 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 60.0 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 72 in the state. Kewaunee County has 45.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county looks like a wedge facing south. The City of Kewaunee is located on the southeast border of the county. Algoma is on the northeast border of the county. Kewaunee is the county seat and Algoma is the largest city. Kewaunee is 13.7% of the county seat while Algoma is 15.8% of the county population. The county and county seat are pronounced KEE-WA-NEE. The largest city is pronounced AL-GOE-MA. This county is in the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.
