The outstanding Neo-Classical masonry and marble structure was erected in 1908.  It is sited at the intersection of Oneida Avenue and Court Street.  United States Highway 8 Business passes five blocks to the south.  Chris H. Tegen is the designer.  It features a dome and veteran memorials on the grounds.  There was also an 1887 version previously in Rhinelander, the only county seat.  The county was created on January 1, 1887 from Lincoln County as the 68th county.  Oneida County is named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat was named for railroad official F. W. Rhinelander. 

Oneida County government consists of a Manager, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 21 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges, a district attorney and a court clerk serve Oneida County (judicial.)  The county is in northern Wisconsin.  Green Bay, Wisconsin is southeast and Madison, Wisconsin is south of the county.  The county center is 11 miles Northwest of Rhinelander nearer Newbold.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Vilas, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, and Price counties. 

The area of the county is 1113.0 square miles.  It is 10 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 39 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 34.0 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 72 in the state.  Oneida County has 21.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 8 enters the county from the east, Forest County, and exits to the southwest, Lincoln County.  United States Highway 45 crosses north to south from Vilas County to Langlade County.  United States Highway 51 comes from Vilas County, northwest, and goes to Lincoln County, southwest.  The county looks like a capital letter J lying face down.  Rhinelander is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  Rhinelander is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 21.9% of the county population.  The county is pronounced OE-NIE-DA.
