The Classical Revival red brick courthouse was built in 1913 and enlarged in 1976 and 1998. The building is located at Court and State streets. United States Highway 151 is three blocks east. B. Mehner provided the building designs. There are veteran memorials on the grounds. There was also an 1882 facility in Chilton. The county was established on January 1, 1836 as an original county (5th county.) Stockbridge was the first county seat until 1856 when Chilton assumed the role. Calumet County is named for the French word for a Native American peace pipe. The county seat was named for Chilington, England.
Calumet County government consists of a sheriff and 21 Supervisors. One Circuit Court Judge and Two Municipal Court Judges serve Calumet County. The county is located in the eastern part of the state. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is south and Green Bay, Wisconsin is north of the county. The county center is 10.4 miles Northwest of Chilton nearer Harrison. The county is surrounded clockwise by Brown, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Winnebago, and Outagamie counties.
The area of the county is 318.2 square miles. It is 68 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 27 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 164.8 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 72 in the state. Calumet County has 82.15% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 151 enters the county from the east, Manitowoc County, and exits to the southwest, Fond du Lac County. The county is a rectangle is an extra leg on the southeast corner. Chilton is located in the southern third of the county. Chilton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 7.8% of the county population. The county is pronounced KAL-UE-MET. This county is in the Appleton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
