The Modern concrete and glass building was constructed in 1981.  There was an 1884 courthouse previously.  The courthouse is at the intersection of Macy and Court streets.  Wisconsin State Highway 175 passes in front of the courthouse.  Peterson, Twohig, & Due are the architects.  The county was organized on January 1, 1836 as an original county (8th county) and Fond du Lac has always been the county seat.  Fond du Lac County and county seat names come from the French meaning “end of lake.”  Fond du Lac County is the birthplace of 1 Wisconsin Governor, J. Scott McCallum. 

Fond du Lac County government consists of a sheriff and 25 Supervisors.  Five Circuit Court Judges and One Municipal Court Judge serve Fond du Lac County.  The county is located in the southeast part of Wisconsin.  Milwaukee, Wisconsin is southeast and Green Bay, Wisconsin is north of the county.  The county center is 5.6 miles Southeast of Fond du Lac nearer Marblehead.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Calumet, Sheboygan, Washington, Dodge, Green Lake, and Winnebago counties. 

The area of the county is 719.6 square miles.  It is 40 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 16 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 144.7 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 72 in the state.  Fond du Lac County has 65.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 41 crosses north to south through the county from Winnebago County to Dodge County.  United States Highway 45 enters from the north, Winnebago County, and exits to the southeast, Washington County.  United States Highway 151 comes from Calumet County, northeast, and goes to Dodge County, south.  The county resembles a capital letter T lying on its side.  The City of Fond du Lac is located near the center of the county.  Fond du Lac is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 42.9% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced FON-DOO-LAK.  This county is in the Fond du Lac Metropolitan Statistical Area.
