The Modern courthouse was constructed in 1958 and remodeled in 1992. It is at the intersection of Nebraska Street at 4th Avenue. Wisconsin State Highway 57 is one block to the northwest of the site. Theodore Oudenvoven is the architect. The building was enlarged in 1975. A classic 1878 facility was also in Sturgeon Bay. A Justice Center was added in 2005 at Emerald and Duluth. The county was organized on January 1, 1851 from Brown County as the 32nd county. Gibraltar was the first county seat until 1851 when Sturgeon Bay assumed the role. The county is named for the strait between the peninsula and Washington Island. Sturgeon Bay was named for the bay and the fishing industry.
Door County government consists of a sheriff and 21 Supervisors. Two Circuit Court Judges serve Door County. The county is on the northeast peninsula in the state. Lake Michigan is on three sides of the peninsula. Green Bay, Wisconsin is southwest and Milwaukee, Wisconsin is south of the county. The county center is 6.5 miles Northeast of Sturgeon Bay nearer Institute. The county is surrounded clockwise by Michigan and Kewaunee, Brown, Oconto, and Marinette counties.
The area of the county is 482 square miles. It is 59 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 44 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 62.4 persons per square mile making it 31 out of 72 in the state. Door County has 39.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States highways in the county. The county is a pencil pointing northeast with a bubble coming out of its end. Sturgeon Bay is located in the southwest quarter of the county. Sturgeon Bay is the county seat and the largest city. It is 32.1% of the county population.
