The excellent red/brown brick Neo-Classical facility was erected in 1912.  It is located on Madison, Lake, Park, and Polk streets.  United States Highway 8 is one block west of the site.  Fremont D. Orff provided the designs.  The building was enlarged in 1978 and 1997.  It features a tower and veteran memorials on the grounds.  The county was created on January 1, 1885 from parts of Langlade and Oconto counties as the 67th county with Crandon as the only county seat.  The county is named for the trees.  Crandon was named for railroad officer Frank P. Crandon. 

Forest County government consists of a sheriff and 24 Supervisors.  One Circuit Court Judge serves Forest and Florence counties.  Forest County is on the northeast border with Michigan.  Green Bay, Wisconsin is southeast and Madison, Wisconsin is south of the county.  The county center is 10.5 miles Northeast of Crandon nearer Argonne.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Michigan and Florence, Marinette, Oconto, Langlade, Oneida, and Vilas counties. 

The area of the county is 1014.1 square miles.  It is 12 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 68 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.0 persons per square mile making it 71 out of 72 in the state.  Forest County has 18.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 8 crosses the county from east to west from Marinette County to Oneida County.  The county looks like a fat capital letter L with the northwest and southwest corners clipped away.  Crandon is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Crandon is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 18.7% of the county population.
