The 1899 red brick Neo-Classical structure sits on Hill Street between Gold and Mill streets. Wisconsin State Highway 23 passes seven blocks northeast of the site. William Waters is the building designer. The structure has been enlarged. The red brick Judicial and Government Center houses most county functions. It is located on County Road A at Commercial. The county was founded on January 1, 1858 from Marquette County as the 55th county with Green Lake as the only county seat. The county and county seat were named for the lake.
Green Lake County government consists of a sheriff and 19 Supervisors. One Circuit Court Judge serves Green Lake County. The county is in southern Wisconsin. Madison, Wisconsin is south and Milwaukee, Wisconsin is southeast of the county. The county center is 3.5 miles West of Green Lake. The county is surrounded clockwise by Waushara, Winnebago, Fond du Lac, Dodge, Columbia, and Marquette counties.

The City of Green Lake is located in the eastern quarter of the county. Berlin is in the northeast quarter of the county and extends into Waushara County. Green Lake is the county seat and Berlin is the largest city. Green Lake is 5.3% of the county population while Berlin is 29.3% of the county population.
