The is a steel and concrete Modern style courthouse. Built in 1972, this structure replaced a classier 1896 version. It is at 9th Street, 1st Avenue, 10th Street, 2nd Avenue. United States Highway 27 is two blocks east. E. Owen Smith and Biggers, Scarbrough, Neal, Crisp & Clark are the architects. Muscogee County was formed on June 9, 1826 from the Creek Lands as the 67th county with Columbus as the only county seat. It later provided land to Harris, Talbot, and Chattahoochee counties. The county is named for the Muscogee Native American tribe. Columbus is named for Explorer Christopher Columbus. He is also the source for Columbia County. The county center is in Columbus 6.6 miles East-Northeast of the city center.

Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Muscogee, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties and Two State Judges and Seven County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Muscogee County (judicial.) The county is in far western Georgia on the border with Alabama. The Chattahoochee River forms its western border. The county is surrounded clockwise by Harris, Talbot, and Chattahoochee counties and Alabama.
The area of the county is 216 square miles. It is 133 out of 159 counties in the state. It ranks 10 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 958.0 persons per square mile making it 8 out of 159 in the state. Muscogee County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 185 comes in from Harris County, north, and terminates. United States Highway 27 crosses north to south through the county from Harris County to Chattahoochee County. United States Highway 27A also enters from Harris County and terminates. United States Highway 80 goes east to west through the county from Talbot County to Alabama. United States Highway 280 enters the county joined with United States Highway 27 from Chattahoochee County, splits, and exits west into Alabama. The county is shape like a tornado funnel. Columbus and Muscogee County are combined thus Columbus occupies the entire county. Columbus is the county seat and only city. It is 100.0% of the county population. The county is pronounced MUS-KO-GEE. This county is in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area.
