The basic red brick Stripped Classical with Colonial Revival building for Quitman County was built in 1939.  It is on Main Street between Harrison and Middle streets, one block south of United States Highway 82.  T. Firth Lockwood, Jr., is the building designer.  Quitman County was founded on December 10, 1858 from parts of Randolph and Stewart counties as the 126th county with Georgetown as the county seat.  General John Anthony Quitman provided his name to the county.  He is also the source for the county seat of Brooks County.  The county seat is named for the Georgetown part of Washington, District of Columbia.  The county center is 9.7 miles East-Southeast of Georgetown nearer Morris. 

Quitman County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Quitman, Atkinson, Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Echols, Grady, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Randolph, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Quitman County (judicial.) The county is on the border with Alabama in southwest Georgia.  Columbus, Georgia is north and Albany, Georgia is southeast of the county.  The Chattahoochee River forms its border with Alabama.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Stewart, Randolph, and Clay counties and Alabama. 

The area of the county is 152 square miles.  It is 154 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 158 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 14.7 persons per square mile making it 151 out of 159 in the state.  Quitman County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 82 enters the county from the east, Randolph County, and exits west into Alabama.  The county is shaped like a dome.  Georgetown and the county are now contiguous.  Georgetown is the county seat and the only city in the county.  It is 100.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Eufaula Micropolitan Statistical Area.
