The red brick Neo-Classical Revival and Colonial Revival courthouse looks more southern than most in Georgia. It was built in 1935 on Main Street between Broad and Ivy streets. Frederick Roy Duncan is the designer. United States Highway 19 is Broad Street in the city. The courthouse features a tower with a working clock and columns. Veteran memorials are on the grounds.
Taylor County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Taylor, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, and Webster counties and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Taylor County (judicial.) The county is in western Georgia between Columbus, Georgia and Macon, Georgia. The county is surrounded clockwise by Upson, Crawford, Macon, Schley, Marion, and Talbot counties. The county was created on January 15, 1852 from parts of Macon, Marion, and Talbot counties as the 98th county. Butler has always been the county seat. Taylor County is named for President Zachary Taylor. Mexican War hero General William Orlando Butler is the name source for the county seat. The county center is 1.7 miles Southeast of Butler.
The area of the county is 378 square miles. It is 65 out of 159 counties in the state. It ranks 140 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 20.7 persons per square mile making it 141 out of 159 in the state. Taylor County has 35.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 19 goes north to south from Upson County to Schley County. United States Highway 80 crosses the county east to west from Upson County to Talbot County. The county almost has a circular shape to it minus the southeast part of the county. Butler is located near the center of the county. Butler is the county seat and the largest city. It is 24.0% of the county population. The Flint River forms its northern and eastern borders.
