The 1964 Modern style building sits on Liberty Street at Victory Street.  United States Highway 280 is Liberty Street.  W. P. Thompson, Jr., is the red brick building designer.  There was a 1906 version of the courthouse also in Lyons, the only county seat.  The structure is under remodeling in 2021.  The county center is 11 miles South of Lyons nearer Santa Claus. 

Toombs County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Toombs, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Bleckley, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and a State Judge and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Toombs County (judicial.)  The county is located in the southeast part of the state.  The Ohoopee River forms part of its eastern border and Altamaha River is its southern border.  Savannah, Georgia is southeast and Macon, Georgia is northwest of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Emanuel, Tattnall, Appling, Jeff Davis, and Montgomery counties.  The county was organized on August 18, 1905 from parts of Emanuel, Tattnall, and Montgomery counties as the 142nd county.  Toombs County is named for Senator Robert Toombs.  The county seat is named for a railroad promoter who brought the railroad to the town. 

The area of the county is 367 square miles.  It is 71 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 69 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 73.7 persons per square mile making it 74 out of 159 in the state.  Toombs County has 55.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 1 crosses the county north to south from Emanuel to Appling counties.  United States Highway 280 goes east to west from Tattnall County to Montgomery County.  The county is a tall rectangle with two ears on top.  Lyons is in the northern quarter of the county.  Vidalia is in the northwest part of the county on the border and extends into Montgomery County.  Lyons is the county seat and Vidalia is the largest city.  Lyons is 15.7% of the county population while Vidalia is 39.9% of the county population.  The county is pronounced TOEMS.  The largest city is pronounced VIE-DAEL-YA.  This county is in the Vidalia Micropolitan Statistical Area.
