The courthouse in Bonners Ferry is an Art Deco style made of white brick and masonry.  The facility is on Kootenai at 1st Street.  United States Highway 2 is three blocks east of the site.  The current courthouse was built in 1940 replacing an older one with an unknown date of construction.  The courthouse architects are Whitehouse and Price.  The building’s outside has settlers’ life carvings.  The county was established on January 23, 1915 as the 35th county with Bonners Ferry as the only county seat.  It was named because of its location on the border with Canada.  The county seat is for Edwin L. Bonner who operated the local ferry.  He is also the source for the name of Bonner County. 

Boundary County government consists of a sheriff, a prosecuter, a coroner, a clerk, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Nine Circuit Court Judges and a Magistrate Court Judge serve Boundary, Benewah, Bonner, Kootenai, and Shoshone counties (judicial.) The county is the farthest north in Idaho.  It borders Washington, Canada, and Montana.  Spokane, Washington is southwest of the county.  The county center is 21.1 miles Northwest of Bonners Ferry.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Montana and Bonner County and Washington. 

The area of the county is 1269 square miles.  It is 23 out of 44 in the state.  It ranks 25 out of 44 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.5 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 44 in the state.  Boundary County has 27.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 2 enters from Montana to the east and exits into Bonner County to the south.  United States Highway 95 originates in the county and combines with United States Highway 2 to go south into Bonner County.  The county is a rectangle with an extension out of the northwest.  Bonners Ferry is in the southeast quarter of the county.  Bonners Ferry is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 20.9% of the county population.
