The dome on the red brick courthouse is unique for this state.  The 1910 structure is located on North 1st Street between West 1st and West 2nd streets.  United States Highway 20 is one block south of the site.  Wayland & Fennel are the architects of this Neo-Classical Revival courthouse.  The county was created on March 4, 1893 from Bingham County as the 18th county with Saint Anthony serving as the only county seat.  It is named for explorer John C. Fremont.  The county seat is named for Saint Anthony Falls in Minnesota. 

Fremont County government consists of a sheriff, a prosecuter, a coroner, a clerk, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Five Circuit Court Judges and a Magistrate Court Judge serve Fremont, Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Clark, Custer, Jefferson, Lemhi, Madison, and Teton counties (judicial.) The county is in the southeast on the border with both Montana and Wyoming.  The Continental Divide follows its border with Montana.  Idaho Falls, Idaho is southwest and Butte, Montana is northwest of the county.  The county center is 33 miles Northeast of Saint Anthony nearer Island Park.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and Wyoming and Teton, Madison, Jefferson, and Clark counties. 

The area of the county is 1867 square miles.  It is 16 out of 44 in the county.  It ranks 23 out of 44 in population in the state.  It has a density of 7.2 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 44 in the state.  Fremont County has 46.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 20 crosses the county north to south from Montana to Madison County.  The overall shape of the county is a backward capital letter L.  St. Anthony is in the extreme south and west part of the county.  Saint Anthony is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Rexburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.
