A red brick Classical Revival courthouse serves Lemhi County. It was built in 1909 at Fulton Street and 2nd Avenue. United States Highway 93 is two blocks east of the site. The building architect is C. C. Rittenhouse. The county was named for a local fort when it was created on January 9, 1869 as the 9th county with Salmon as the only county seat. The county was taken from Idaho County. The county seat is named for the river.

Lemhi County is in eastern Idaho on the border with Montana. The Salmon River flows through the county. Missoula, Montana is north and Boise, Idaho is southwest of the county. The county center is 11.2 miles South of Salmon. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and Clark, Butte, Custer, Valley, and Idaho counties.

It has a density of 1.74 persons per square mile making it 39 out of 44 in the state. Lemhi County has 40.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 93 goes north to south in the county from Montana to Custer County. The county looks like a stick horse. Salmon is in the northern third of the county. Salmon is the county seat and the largest city. It is 39.7% of the county population. The county is pronounced LEM-HIE.
