Clark County has a Modern style tan brick and concrete courthouse built in 1970.  It sits at Court and Watt streets.  Interstate Highway 65 is eight blocks to the west of the site.  A Government Administration building sits next to the courthouse.  Wright, Porteous & Lowe are the building designers of this columned structure.  The county was created on February 3, 1801 from Knox County as the 2nd county.  It originally included most of the land that is now 20 southern Indiana counties.  Springville (1801), Jeffersonville (1802), Charlestown (1811), and Jeffersonville again (1878) are the order of county seats.  The Charlestown courthouse was built in 1817 and an earlier Jeffersonville courthouse was built in 1878.  The county is named for War of 1812 hero General George Rogers Clark.  The county seat is named for President Thomas Jefferson.  He is also the namesake of Jefferson County.  

Clark County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  Four Circuit Court Judges and a prosecutor serve Clark County (judicial.) The county is in southern Indiana on the Ohio River border with Kentucky.  Louisville, Kentucky is immediately south of the county.  The county center is 13.7 miles North of Jeffersonville nearer Charlestown.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Scott and Jefferson counties and Kentucky and Floyd and Washington counties. 

The area of the county is 373 square miles.  It is 62 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 324.6 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 92 in the state.  Clark County has 74.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 crosses the county north to south from Scott County to Kentucky.  United States Highway 31 parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Scott County to Kentucky.  The county is shaped like a science fiction pistol pointing east.  Jeffersonville is on the southern tip of the county.  Jeffersonville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 40.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
