The red brick courthouse with white columns was built in 1844.  An addition was added in 2002.  It is sited on Main between Henrietta and Mulberry streets.  Indiana State Highway 262 is Main Street.  Colonel Abel C. Pepper provided for the Greek Revival designs.  The grounds feature veteran memorials and a canon.  The county was established on January 4, 1844 as the 89th county and named for the bordering Ohio River.  It was taken from Dearborn County with Rising Sun as the only county seat.  The county seat is a descriptive name of the sunrise over the Ohio River. 

Ohio County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, a Superior Court Judge, and a prosecutor serve Ohio County (judicial.) The county is in southeast Indiana on the border with Kentucky.  The Ohio River forms its eastern border.   The county center is 6.7 miles West of Rising Sun nearer Milton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Dearborn County and Kentucky and Switzerland and Ripley counties. 

The area of the county is 86 square miles.  It is 92 out of 92 in the state.   It ranks 92 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 69.0 persons per square mile making it 60 out of 92 in the state.  Ohio County has 37.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstate or United States Highways in the county.  The county is shaped like a wedge.  The county seat is on the eastern border of the county.  Rising Sun is the county seat and as the only incorporated city it is also the largest city.  It is 37.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Cincinnati-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
