The red brick and stone 1885 Romanesque courthouse of Linn County sits on a square surrounded by Chestnut, 3rd, Main, and 4th streets. Kansas State Highway 52 is Main Street. George Ropes is the architect. The building features a tower. A Judicial Center has been added south of the courthouse in 1979. Linn County was created on February 26, 1867 as the 54th county. Various locations; Paris, La Cygne, Farmers City, and Pleasanton, served as county seat until 1885 when Mound City became the permanent county seat. The county is named for Missouri Senator Lewis Fields Linn. The county seat is a geographical name for its location near Sugar Mound.

Kansas City, Kansas is north and Wichita, Kansas is southwest of the county. A rectangle county has Mound City in the southern quarter. Pleasanton is in the eastern third of the county. Mound City is the county seat and Pleasanton is the largest city. Mound City is 6.8% of the county population while Pleasanton is 12.6% of the county population.

It has a density of 16.0 persons per square mile making it 39 out of 105 in the state. Linn County has 47.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 69 travels north to south in the county from Miami County to Bourbon County. The county center is 6.1 miles North of Mound City nearer Farlinville. The county is surrounded clockwise by Miami County and Missouri and Bourbon, Allen, Anderson, and Franklin counties. Missouri is the eastern border for the county. This county is in the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
