A masonry and concrete Modern facility was erected in 1964. It sits on Main Street between 1st and Center streets. United States Highway 60 is one block to the east. Tom M. Paine and Associates were the architects. A Judicial Center was built in 2002 across the street. The courthouse sits in a park setting with veteran memorials and a gazebo. There was an 1842 structure previously in Henderson, the only county seat. The county was founded on December 14, 1798 from Christian County as the 27th county. The county and county seat honor Colonel Richard Henderson who was an original landowner in the county. Henderson County was the birthplace of 2 Kentucky Governors, Lazarus W. Powell and Albert B. Chandler, Sr.

The county is situated in the northwest part of the state on the border with Indiana. Evansville, Indiana is directly north across the Ohio River. The county center is 7.6 miles South of Henderson nearer Anthoston. The county is surrounded clockwise by Indiana and Daviess, McLean, Webster, and Union counties.

It has a density of 101.8 persons per square mile making it 29 out of 120 in the state. Henderson County has 65.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 41 goes north to south in the county from Indiana to Webster County. United States Highway 41 Alternate originates in the county and heads south into Webster County. United States Highway 60 travels east to west from Daviess County to Union County. The county looks like a bowl of popcorn with most of the popcorn eaten. The City of Henderson is on the northern Ohio River border. Henderson is the county seat and the largest city. It is 63.0% of the county population. This county is in the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
