The Modern red brick 2003 courthouse replaced a 1929 stone facility.  The structure is on Main, Williams, Walnut, and Sycamore streets.  United States Highway 460 is Walnut Street.  CMW, Inc., are the new courthouse designers.  Henry N. Foster designed the old stone courthouse.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The old courthouse features a dome/tower.  The county was created on May 29, 1869 from parts of Bath, Montgomery, Morgan, Powell, and Wolfe counties as the 114th county.  Frenchburg has always been the county seat.  Congressman Richard Hickman Menefee is the county’s namesake.  Judge Richard French inspired the name of the county seat. 

Menifee County government consists of a County Judge Executive, a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 5 Magistrates (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges and Two District Court Judges serve Menifee, Bath, Montgomery and Rowan counties and a court clerk serves Menifee County (judicial.) The county is situated in eastern Kentucky.  Lexington, Kentucky is west and Huntington, West Virginia is northeast.  The county center is 1.6 miles South-Southeast of Frenchburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bath, Rowan, Morgan, Wolfe, Powell, and Montgomery counties. 

The area of the county is 204 square miles.  It is 99 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 115 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 30.0 persons per square mile making it 108 out of 120 in the state.  Menifee County has 9.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 460 goes east to west in the county from Morgan County to Montgomery County.  The county appears to be a pyramid.  Frenchburg is west of center in the county.  Frenchburg is the county seat and the largest city since it is the incorporated city.  It is 9.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Mount Sterling Micropolitan Statistical Area.
