The conservative white stucco Greek Revival building was built in 1896. The courthouse is located northwest of the town on Louisiana State Highway 1 at Martin Luther King Street. The building has an annex attached. A Police Jury Building has also been added. Three courthouses have served the parish all in the town of Napoleonville. The parish was formed in December 31, 1807 as the 14th parish after being part of the large Lafourche Parish. Harrod & Andry were the architects who provided a clock tower on the courthouse. The parish got its name from a small parish church, named after the Roman Catholic Feast of Assumption celebrating the rise of the Virgin Mary to heaven. The parish seat was named by a French settler for the French ruler Napoleon.
Assumption Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive). It has 9 Police Jury Members (legislative.) Five District Court Judges serve Assumption, Ascension, and Saint James parishes and Three Justice Court Judges serve Assumption Parish (judicial.) Assumption Parish is in the southeast part of the state. Bayou Lafourche is one of many bayous and estuaries in the parish. The parish center is 4.3 miles West-Southwest of Napoleonville. The parish is surrounded clockwise by Ascension, Saint James, Lafourche, Terrebonne, Saint Mary, Saint Martin, Iberia, and Iberville parishes.
The area of the parish is 364 square miles. It is 57 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 43 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 57.8 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 64 in the state. Assumption Parish has 2.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 90 clips the southern tip of the parish from Terrebonne Parish to Saint Mary Parish. The parish is overall diamond in shape. Napoleonville is in the northern half of the parish. Napoleonville is the parish seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city. It is 2.6% of the parish population. The parish is pronounced A-SUMP-SHUN. The parish seat is pronounced NA-POE-LEE-ON-VIL. This parish is in the Pierre Part Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Napoleonville
