The Modern style 1977 concrete parish courthouse fits well into an area of city and parish facilities. The courthouse is sited on St. Louis Street and Louisiana streets. Interstate Highway 110 is seven blocks east of the location. Desmond-Miremont & Associate and Wilson & Coleman are the architects. A 2007 District Courthouse augments the parish courthouse. 1857 and 1923 courthouses were also located in Baton Rouge. The parish was formed on January 1, 1812 from Spanish West Florida as the 24th parish. The parish and parish seat’s names came from a red cypress tree which stood where the city was founded and given the French name “red stick”. East Baton Rouge Parish was the birthplace of 4 Louisiana Governors, Henry L. Fuqua, David C. Treen, Sr, Piyush Jindal, and John B. Edwards. The Louisiana state capitol is located in this parish.

The parish is surrounded clockwise by East Feliciana, Saint Helena, Livingston, Ascension, Iberville, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes.

It has a density of 969.8 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 64 in the state. East Baton Rouge Parish has 63.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 10 comes from Ascension Parish in the southeast and goes west into West Baton Rouge Parish. Interstate Highway 12 enters from Livingston Parish to the east and terminates in the parish. United States Highway 61 goes northwest to southeast through the parish, West Feliciana Parish to Ascension Parish. United States Highway 190 parallels Interstate Highway 12 from Livingston Parish into West Baton Rouge Parish. The parish is shaped like a fat C. Baton Rouge is on the western border of the parish. Baton Rouge is the parish seat and largest city. It is 49.7% of the parish population. New Orleans lies to the southeast of the parish. The parish and parish seat’s names are pronounced BAT-UN ROOJ. This parish is in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
