The Greek Revival 1840 white brick and stucco courthouse sits stately on Louisiana State Highway 10. The building is on Saint Helena Street at Liberty Street. Louisiana State Highway 10 is Saint Helena Street most of the way through the town. J. S. Savage is the courthouse architect. The building was renovated in 2011. Jackson was the first parish seat until the parish was divided. Clinton has had two courthouses. Feliciana Parish was formed in 1805 from Spanish West Florida. East Feliciana and West Felicana parishes were divided into two on January 1, 1824 as the 28th parish. Saint Helena, Liberty, Bank, and Jackson streets border the site. A. Hays Town was the architect for this structure. Felicite de Galvez, wife of the Spanish Governor is the namesake of the parish’s name. De Witt Clinton, American statesman, was the source for the parish seat.
East Feliciana Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive). It has 9 Police Jury Members (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve East Feliciana and West Feliciana parishes and Four Justice Court Judges serve East Feliciana Parish (judicial.) The parish is in the southeast part of the state just to the north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mississippi forms the northern border with the parish. The Amite River is the eastern border. The parish center is 1.5 miles South-Southwest of Clinton. The parish is surrounded clockwise by Mississippi and Saint Helena, East Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes.
The area of the parish is 456 square miles. It is 51 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 48 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 42.8 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 64 in the state. East Feliciana Parish has 35.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 61 clips the southwest corner of the parish from West Feliciana Parish, west, to East Baton Rouge Parish, south. The parish’s shape is a bowl is a larger base than its top. Clinton is slightly east of the center of the parish. Jackson is near the western border of the parish. Clinton is the parish seat and Jackson is the largest city. Clinton is 6.9% of the parish population while Jackson is 20.4% of the parish population. The parish is pronounced EEST FE-LEE-CEE-AN-A. This parish is in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
