Madison Parish (10,015), Tallulah (6,301)                

A white brick and stucco building is the Colonial Revival courthouse of Madison Parish.  The courthouse was built in 1939 and was later enlarged. The structure is sited on Cedar Street (United States Highway 65) and Green Street, one block south of its intersection with United States Highway 80.  Richmond was the original parish seat with Tallulah following in 1862.  Delta was parish seat beginning in 1868 until Tallulah assumed it in 1883.  On January 18, 1838 Madison Parish was formed from Concordia, Carroll, and Ouachita parishes as the 35th parish.  A gazebo is situated on the front lawn with white columns on the front of the building.  J. W. Smith and Associates designed the facility.  The county seat is named for a girlfriend of a railroad official.  The parish was named for United States President James Madison. 

Madison Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 5 Police Jury Members (legislative.)  One District Court Judge serves Madison, East Carroll, and Tensas parishes and Four Justice Court Judges serve Madison Parish (judicial.) The parish is in the northeast part of the state with Mississippi on its eastern border.  Monroe, Louisiana is west and Vicksburg, Mississippi is east.  The Mississippi River forms the eastern border and Bayou Macon forms the western border.  The parish center is 6.8 miles West-Southwest of Tallulah.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by East Carroll Parish and Mississippi and Tensas, Franklin, and Richland parishes. 

The area of the parish is 651 square miles.  It is 38 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 57 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 15.4 persons per square mile making it 59 out of 64 in the state.  Madison Parish has 70.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate 20 comes from the east (Mississippi) and goes to the west (Richland Parish).  United States Highway 65 enters from East Carroll Parish on the north and goes into Tensas Parish on the south.  United States Highway 80 parallels Interstate Highway 20 from Mississippi to Richland Parish.  The parish is overall rectangular but the east and west borders meander with the rivers.  Tallulah is in the northeast quarter of the parish.  Tallulah is the parish seat and the largest city.  It is 62.9% of the parish population.  The parish seat is pronounced TA-LUE-LA.  This parish is in the Tallulah Micropolitan Statistical Area.
