The 1845 red brick Victorian courthouse is on Main Street at Court Street. Maine State Highway 15 is Main Street in this part of the town. T. H. Chamberlain provided the original courthouse designs. The building was extensively remodeled in 1886 and renovated in 1975. The structure was enlarged in 1956 and 2012. The county name is Native American for “branch of the river.” The county seat is the merger of the two towns. Dover is named for Dover, England and Foxcroft is named for a settler. The county was created on March 23, 1838 from parts of Penobscot and Somerset counties as the 11th county. Dover was the county seat until merging with Foxcroft to form Dover-Foxcroft.
