The 1899 masonry governmental Greek Revival structure stands among others at Calvert Street between Fayette and Lexington streets.  Interstate Highway 83 is five blocks to the east.  The courthouse was designed by J. M. Noel Wyatt & William G. Nolting.  Columns are among the building features.  A District Courthouse supports the city’s courthouse.  The independent city is named for Lord Baltimore.  Baltimore County is also named after him.  Baltimore City was the birthplace of 9 Maryland Governors, Levin Winder, Charles C. Ridgely, William P. Whyte, John L. Carroll, Herbert R. O’Conor, Theodore R. McKeldin, Spiro T. Agnew, Marvin Mandel, and William D. Schaefer.  The city was founded on July 30, 1729 from Baltimore County as the 13th county equivalent. 

Baltimore City government consists of a mayor, an administrator, an auditor, a police commissioner, and a sheriff (executive).  It has 5 Council Members (legislative.)  Thirty-three Circuit Court Judges, Thirty-three District Court Judges, a court clerk, and city attorney serve Baltimore City (judicial.) The city is in northeast Maryland.  Washington, District of Columbia is southwest and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is northeast of the city.  The city center is in Baltimore .4 miles North of downtown.  The independent city is surrounded clockwise by Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties. 

The area of the county is 92 square miles.  It is 24 out of 24 in the state.  It ranks 5 out of 24 in population in the state.  It has a density of 6366.2 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 24 in the state.  Baltimore City has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 70 originates in the city and goes west into Baltimore County.  Interstate Highway 83 enters from the north, Baltimore County, and terminates.  Interstate Highway 95 travels east to southwest from Baltimore County to Baltimore County.   United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Baltimore County to Baltimore County.  United States Highway 29 originates and heads southwest, Baltimore County.  United States Highway 40 enters from the east, Baltimore County, and exits west, Baltimore County.  The city is a baseball home base with the point shifted to the southeast.  This city is in the Baltimore-Towson Metropolitan Statistical Area.  As an independent city, it is the seat.
