The red concrete Modern courthouse was built in 1982. It is located on Maryland Avenue and Jefferson Street. Maryland State Highway 28 is one block south of the site. Elmer A. Delmar is the architect. There were 1891 and 1931 buildings also in Rockville, the only county seat. A District Courthouse also supports the county. Montgomery County was created on September 6, 1776 from Frederick County as the 18th county. The county is named for Revolutionary War hero General Richard Montgomery. The county seat is named for Rock Creek. Montgomery County was the birthplace of 2 Maryland Governors, F. P. Blair Lee III and Westley W. O. Moore.

The county center is 7.9 miles Northwest of Rockville nearer Gaithersburg. The county is surrounded clockwise by Carroll, Howard, and Prince George’s counties and District of Columbia and Virginia and Frederick County.

Interstate Highway 270 enters from Frederick County, north, and terminates. United States Highway 29 goes east to south in the county from Howard County to District of Columbia. The county is shaped like a bowl of salad pouring southwest. Rockville is in the southern half of the county. Rockville is the county seat and Gaithersburg is the largest city. Rockville is 6.3% of the county population while Gaithersburg is 6.6% of the county population. This county is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
