A Modern concrete and glass building was constructed in 1972. The courthouse is at Main and Macomb streets. Michigan State Highway 3 passes one block east of the site. Ellis-Naeyaert & Associates are the building designers. Veteran memorials are on the grounds which are along the river. An Administration Building was built in 1998. There were earlier versions from 1818, 1840, 1880 and 1931 all in Mount Clemens. Macomb County was formed on January 15, 1818 from Wayne County as the 3rd county. It is named for United States Army commander, Alexander Macomb, Jr. The county seat is named for settler, Christian Clemens. Macomb County was the birthplace of 1 Michigan Governor, Alexander J. Groesbeck.

Detroit, Michigan is directly south of the county. The county center is 9.3 miles North-Northeast of Mount Clemens nearer New Haven. The county is surrounded clockwise by Saint Clair County and Canada and Wayne, Oakland, and Lapeer counties.

Interstate Highway 94 enters the county from Saint Clair County, northeast, and exits into Wayne County, south. The county is a rectangle with the southeast corner missing. Mount Clemens is in the southern third of the county. Warren is in the southwest quarter of the county. Mount Clemens is the county seat and Warren is the largest city. Mount Clemens is 1.8% of the county population while Warren is 15.8% of the county population. This county is in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia Metropolitan Statistical Area.
