A tan brick Modern Justice Center was constructed in 1965 to augment the 1883 courthouse.  It was enlarged in 1980 and 1997.  Stegner-Hendrickson-McNutt and Erickson-Ellison are the designers.  The courthouse is on 1st Avenue at 2nd Street.  United States Highway 71 is two blocks west of the courthouse.  The building was renovated in 2012.  It was designed by Charles J. Sparks.  It sits on a hill with veteran memorials on the grounds.  Todd County was created on February 20, 1855 from Cass County as the 31st county with Long Prairie as the only county seat.  The county is named for Civil War General John Blair Smith Todd.  The county seat is named for the river. 

The area of the county is 942.0 square miles.  It is 23 out of 87 in the state.  It ranks 42 out of 87 in population in the state.  It has a density of 26.8 persons per square mile making it 45 out of 87 in the state.  Todd County has 37.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 94 clips the southwest corner of the county from Douglas County, west, to Stearns County, south.  United States Highway 10 cuts the northeast corner from Wadena County, north, to Morrison County, east.  United States Highway 52 is joined with Interstate Highway 94 from Douglas to Stearns counties.  United States Highway 71 goes north to south from Wadena County to Stearns County.  The county is a rectangle.  Long Prairie is in the southern third of the county.  Long Prairie is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 14.5% of the county population. 

Todd County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer, an auditor, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-five District Court Judges serve Todd, Becker, Benton, Clay, Douglas, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Stearns, and Wadena counties (judicial.) The county is in western Minnesota.  Minneapolis, Minnesota is southeast and Fargo, North Dakota is northwest of the county.  The county center is 5.8 miles North-Northeast of Long Prairie nearer Browerville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Wadena, Cass, Morrison, Stearns, Douglas, and Otter Tail counties.
