The pleasant red brick Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1897.  The courthouse is on a square at Washington, Jackson, Jefferson, and Madison streets.  Mississippi State Highway 12 Business is Jefferson Street in the town.  The building features columns and a working clock.  There are veteran memorials on the grounds.  Andrew J. Bryan is the building architect.  The county was founded on December 31, 1833 from Madison County as the 28th county with Kosciusko as the only county seat.  It gets its name from the fictional novel heroine.  The county seat is named for Revolutionary War Polish General Tadeusz Kosciusko. 

Attala County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two Chancery Court Judges serve Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Kemper, Neshoba, and Winston counties, Two District Court Judges serve Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster, and Winston counties and a court clerk serves Attala County (judicial.) The county is in the central part of the state.  Jackson, Mississippi is southwest of the county.  The county center is 8.4 miles North-Northwest of Kosciusko nearer Hesterville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Choctaw, Winston, Neshoba, Leake, Madison, Holmes, Carroll, and Montgomery counties. 

The area of the county is 735 square miles.  It is 11 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 52 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 24.3 persons per square mile making it 58 out of 82 in the state.  Attala County has 43.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county looks like a fat plow.  Kosciusko is located in the southern half of the county.  Kosciusko is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 39.8% of the county population.  The county is pronounced A-TAL-LA.  The county seat is pronounced KOS-SEE-US-KOE.
