The Modern brown/red brick building was constructed in 1961.  There was a classier 1883 courthouse earlier.  The county was organized on April 7, 1870 from parts of Carroll, Choctaw, Tallahatchie, and Yalobusha counties as the 64th county with Grenada as the only county seat.  The current courthouse is on Green Street and 1st Street.  United States Highway 51 is seven blocks west of the site.  The building was designed by Pritchard & Nickles and features marble interior walls.  It faces to a city green.  The county and county seat are named for the province in Spain.  Grenada County was the birthplace for 1 Mississippi Governor, William F. Winter. 

Grenada County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Three Chancery Court Judges serve Grenada, DeSoto, Montgomery, Panola, Tate, and Yalobusha counties, Two District Court Judges serve Grenada, Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Montgomery, Webster, and Winston counties and a court clerk serves Grenada County (judicial.) The county is in north central Mississippi.  Memphis, Tennessee is northwest and Jackson, Mississippi is southwest of the county.  The county center is in Grenada 1.2 miles South of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Yalobusha, Calhoun, Webster, Montgomery, Carroll, Leflore, and Tallahatchie counties. 

The area of the county is 422 square miles.  It is 67 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 43 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 51.2 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 82 in the state.  Grenada County has 58.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 55 crosses the county north to south from Yalobusha County to Carroll County.  United States Highway 51 parallels Interstate Highway 55 from Yalobusha County to Montgomery County.  The county looks like a submarine.  The City of Grenada is at the center of the county.  Grenada is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 58.7% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced GRE-NAE-DA.  This county is in the Grenada Micropolitan Statistical Area.
