The Modern red brick structure was built in 1976 and sits on a square at Main, Locust, Maple, and East streets. Missouri State Highway 116 passes two blocks to the south of the courthouse. There were 1834, 1859, and 1895 facilities earlier. A statue of Missouri Senator Atchison sits in front of the courthouse. The architectural company Architects Design Collaborative, Inc., is credited for the building design. The county was organized on January 2, 1833 from Native American Territory as the 37th county. Concord was the first county seat until 1834 when Plattsburg assumed the role. The county is named for United States Vice President George Clinton. The county seat is named for Plattsburgh, New York.

Interstate Highway 35 goes north to south through the county from De Kalb County to Clay County. United States Highway 69 parallels Interstate Highway 35 from De Kalb to Clay counties. United States Highway 169 enters from Buchanan County, northwest, and exits into Clay County, south. The county is a rectangle.

The county is in northwest Missouri. Kansas City, Missouri is south and Saint Louis, Missouri is east of the county. The county center is 5 miles Northeast of Plattsburg. The county is surrounded clockwise by De Kalb, Caldwell, Ray, Clay, Platte, and Buchanan counties. Plattsburg is in the southwest quarter of the county. Cameron is on the northeast border of the county and extends into De Kalb County. Plattsburg is the county seat and Cameron is the largest city. Plattsburg is 10.5% of the county population while Cameron is 24.0% of the county population. This county is in the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
