A red and brown brick Modern building constructed in 1936 is the courthouse.  The courthouse is on California Avenue at 5th Street.  United States Highway 2 travels four blocks to the south of the site.  Fred A. Brinkman is the building architect.  The building was remodeled and enlarged in 1978.  Statues of eagles and a gazebo are on the grounds.  Lincoln County was founded on March 9, 1909 as the 28th county with Libby as the only county seat.  There were two earlier versions in Libby the last one was built in 1913.  The county is named for United States President Abraham Lincoln.  The county seat is named for the daughter of a settler. 

Lincoln County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One District Court Judge and a court clerk serve Liberty County (judicial.)  The county is in the northwest corner of the state on the border with both Canada and Idaho.  Missoula, Montana is southeast of the county.  The county center is 27.5 miles Northeast of Libby.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Flathead and Sanders counties and Idaho.  Lincoln County looks like a school bus heading south with an added tail pipe sticking northeast from the county. 

The area of the county is 3613 square miles.  It is 12 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 10 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 5.4 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 56 in the state.  Lincoln County has 25.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 2 crosses the county east to west from Flathead County to Idaho.  United States Highway 93 originates at the Canadian border and travels southeast to Flathead County.  Libby is in the southwest quarter of the state.  Libby is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 14.1% of the county population.
