The Modern tan brick building was built in 1975 on Washington Street at Golden Gate. Washington Street is Nebraska State Highway 85 in the town. McGaughy, Marshall, McMillan & Backlund were the building designers. The building was remodeled in 2009. A Hall of Justice was added in 1975 and an Administrative Building in 2008. The county was organized on February 1, 1857 from parts of Cass and Douglas counties as the 29th county. There were 1875 and 1923 versions of the courthouse. Bellevue was the first county seat until 1875 when Papillion became the seat. The county is named for Colonel Peter A. Sarpy. Papillion is French for “butterfly.”

The county is on the eastern border with Iowa. Omaha, Nebraska is directly north of the county. The Platte River forms its western and southern borders. The county is 13.2 miles Southwest of Papillion nearer Springfield. The county is surrounded clockwise by Douglas County and Iowa and Cass and Saunders counties.

United States Highway 75 goes north to south from Douglas County to Cass County. The county is shaped like the State of Delaware. Papillion is located near the northern border of the county. The largest city is in the northeast corner of the county. Papillion is the county seat and Bellevue is the largest city. Papillion is 12.7% of the county population while Bellevue is 33.7% of the county population. The county is pronounced SAR-PEE. The county seat is pronounced PA-PIL-YUN. This county is in the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area.
