An 1879 red brick courthouse for Eureka County is on Main Street at Bateman Street.  United States Highway 50 is Main Street in the town.  George C. Costerisan provided the Italianate designs for the courthouse.  The building was enlarged in 1996.  A Justice/Administration Center was added in 1996.  The county was formed on January 1, 1873 from Lander County as the 14th county with Eureka as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for the Greek word for “I’ve found it.” 

Eureka County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges serve Eureka, Lincoln and White Pine counties and Two Justice Court Judges serve Eureka County (judicial.)  The county is in north central Nevada.  Reno, Nevada is west and Las Vegas, Nevada is south.  The county center is 51.3 miles North-Northwest of Eureka nearer Carlin.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Elko, White Pine, Nye, and Lander counties. 

The area of the city is 4176 square miles.  It is 11 out of 17 in the state.  It ranks 16 out of 17 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.4 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 17 in the state.  Eureka County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 80 cuts the north part of the county east to west from Elko County, east, to Lander County, west.  United States Highway 50 crosses east to west from White Pine County, east, to Lander County, west.  The county resembles a tall chair.  The City of Eureka is located near the southeast border of the county.  Eureka is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 22.3% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced YU-REE-KA.  This county is in the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area.
