A 1983 brick Modern structure replaced the traditional 1904 facility.  It is located on 5th Street at Martin Luther King Boulevard.  United States Highway 30 is four blocks northeast of the site.  The architect is unknown.  There was also an 1853 courthouse in Camden, the only county seat.  Camden County was formed on March 13, 1844 from Gloucester County as the 19th county.  The county and county seat are named for Lord Camden. 

Camden County government consists of an executive, a sheriff, an administrator and a clerk (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-seven Superior Court Judges and a prosecutor serve Camden County (judicial.)  The county is in southwest New Jersey on the border with Pennsylvania.  Newark, New Jersey is northeast and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is northwest of the county.  The county center is 8.3 miles Southeast of Camden nearer Ashland.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pennsylvania and Burlington, Atlantic, and Gloucester counties. 

The area of the county is 222 square miles.  It is 17 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 9 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2358.0 persons per square mile making it 7 out of 21 in the state.  Camden County has 46.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 295 goes northeast to southwest in the county from Burlington County to Gloucester County.  United States Highway 30 enters from Pennsylvania, northwest, and exits to Atlantic County, southeast.  The county resembles a truck’s gear shift knob.  The City of Camden is on the northwest border across from Philadelphia.  Camden is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 13.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
